I used to have this idea about writing a novel called Simple Gifts about a child with special needs. I can't imagine writing that book, now or ever. Because the more I learn, the more it becomes apparent to me that there's nothing at all "simple" about a child with special needs.

Parenting is complicated enough....add something "unique" and off the Rickter scale it goes....my niece is autistic, and I marvel at her parents.....smiles.
Yep. I'm increasingly resistant to the whole idea of people being "simple." It's right up there with other generalizations of kids with Down syndrome, including: they're always cheerful, they never lie, etc. My child is a child, first and foremost! She does tell fibs sometimes and she has her mood swings. She also has some additional challenges.
